Here are some national eateries that are pet-friendly places to eat:

If you like to travel about the US, here is a list of twenty-four nationally franchised eateries that welcome pets along with their people:

CAT & FIDDLE – LOS ANGELES, CA

Located on Sunset Boulevard in Holywood, you and your pooch can listen to live jazz bands play on the open patio. They offer British pub food for people and offer a special menu for pets with fun names like Roll over Rover (pork “Banger” sausage), Hits the Spot (Charly Bear liver treats), My Little Chickadee (grilled chicken breast), Fido’s Dram (hamburger patty), and chicken jerky (as itself).

MOSS BEACH DISTILLERY- MOSS BEACH, CALIFORNIA

In addition to a varied people menu including seafood favorites like crab cakes, chowder, fish & chips, and burgers, sandwiches, pasta, salads,  and steak; this fun restaurant offers a full doggie menu. Their pet friendly menu includes a range of items for the choosy canine like kibble, hot dogs, and skirt steak. They will even provide warm firepits and blankets to keep you cozy on their outdoor patio that overlooks Fitzgerald Marine Reserve. [Tip: You need to order from the bar before heading outside as the patio is self-service. ]

LUCKY LABRADOR BREWING COMPANY – PORTLAND, OR

This friendly brewing company has four locations in Portland, serving American pub food and craft brew beers. There are large open patios for your four-legged companions to accompany you on a night out.

THE SHED- PORTLAND, OR

This West Coast café has their doggie items right on the regular menu- now how’s that for equality. They serve traditional favorites including burgers, salads, mac ‘n cheese, and brunch items. And for the earth-conscious pet owner, it is nice to know that they compost everything.  They also have gluten-free options and a kids menu.

[Tip:  Tuesdays are “Doggie Love Night” at the Shed — BOGO= Dogs get a free item for every people item ordered.]

BAD DOG TAVERN – CHICAGO, IL

This pet friendly eatery offers pizza and Belgian craft beers, wine, and signature martinis. While you enjoy your meal you can spot other four-legged visitors on the Bad Dog Hall of Fame or watch the game on one of their many television screens. Come. Sit. Stay. (That’s their motto.)

THE HOBBIT CAFE – HOUSTON, TX

Adorned with Lord of the Rings regalia, this place is perfect for fans, both humans and pooches. They a wide variety of Mexican comfort food including: nachos, Jamaican wings, shrimp rolls, soups and salads.

BARKING DOG LUNCHEONETTE – NEW YORK CITY, NY

At the corner of 3rd Avenue and 94th Street in NYC’s upper east side of Manhattan, Barking Dog Luncheonette offers pet friendly outdoor seating with a “dog bar” and a water fountain for pet patrons. Offering hearty American fare, this luncheonette is recommended for brunch.

FARMICIA – PHILADELPHIA, PA

For the conscientious foodie, Farmicia offers locally sourced, organic, and seasonal food! They offer vegetarian (including vegan) and carnivorous meals which you can enjoy in the outdoor seating area located on a quaint street setting.

ARGONAUT TAVERN – WASHINGTON, DC

If you happen to be visiting our nation’s capital on a Saturday, stop by the happy hour at this tavern located near Gallaudet University. They offer special treats for canine companions including homemade “pop tarts” and doughnuts made just for dogs.  And unlike many hotels in the DC area, this restaurant is reasonably priced.

THE LIBERTY HOTEL’S “YAPPIER HOUR” – BOSTON, MA

In the warmer spring and summer months when outdoor seating is more comfortable, this hotel offers a special “doggies’ night” happy hour on Wednesdays from 5:30 – 8 p.m. You and your dog can unwind after a ruff day in the outdoor lounge with special “puptails” including “muttinis” just for dogs 21 and up (in dog years).

BRUSTER’S REAL ICE CREAM– AL, CA, CT, DE, FL, GA, ID, KY, MD, MS, NH, NJ, NY, NC, OH, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA and Guyana and South Korea.

Bruster’s ice cream makes ice cream the old-fashioned way with slow-kettle processing from a milk-based mix. In 19 states, your dog can get a free dog cone or cup of ice cream topped with a Milk Bone while you enjoy your creamy, frozen treat.

CULVER’S FROZEN CUSTARD– CO, ID, UT, WY, AZ, TX, IL, IN, IA, KS, MI, MN, MO, NE, ND, OH, SD, WI, FL, GA, KY, NC, SC, TN (not in Northeast)

Known for its fresh frozen custard and cheese curds, you can also enjoy burgers and fries in the drive-thru or outside as your dog enjoys such treats as   The restaurant serves burgers, fries and is well-known for its. If you go through the drive-thru or dine alfresco, your pup might score some treats like a pup cup of vanilla ice cream with a dog bone or milk bones.

DAIRY QUEEN– Illinois, Minnesota, Vermont and Texas

You may have known that DQ has been serving soft serve ice cream to customers since 1940, but did you know that they also offer dogs a free small vanilla soft-serve topped with a miniature dog bone called a “pup cup”? Now you do. You scream, I scream, and pets scream for ice cream.

HANDEL’S HOMEMADE ICE CREAM AND YOGURT– AL, AZ, CA, FL, IN, NV, OH, OR, and PA

This ice cream chain serves “Dogsters”, a veterinary-approved dog treat available in peanut butter and mint flavors for the health conscious dog.

IN-N-OUT – West Coast

The West Coast’s beloved burger chain caters to dogs and their people. You may have hear of In N out’s “secret” menu, but did you know that they had a hidden menu for dogs? The most commonly ordered pet friendly item is an unseasoned “pup patty” sans bread or toppings. (Trivia: celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain was a huge fan).

JOHNNY ROCKETS– AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DC, FL, GA, HI, IL, KY, MA, MO, MN, MD, NC, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI

Johnny Rockets is a fun ‘50s-inspired diner that offers traditional diner food, burgers, fries, shakes and the like for people. And your dog can enjoy a cut-up burger patty and water in their outdoor patio areas

[Tip: Their Southern California’s Victoria Gardens location (Rancho Cucamonga) teamed up with a local dog bakery to put together a 20-item menu for doggies that includes a “Lickety Split Ice Cream” and “Pupcakes”, hot dogs, and unseasoned beef patty topped with a fried egg.]

LAZY DOG RESTAURANT & BAR-California, Nevada, Colorado, Illinois, Georgia and Texas

This restaurant and bar welcomes all dogs in their outdoor pet-friendly patios. They even offer a special dogs only menu that includes: burger or grilled chicken breast served with rice (brown or white) and veggies (peas and carrots). TIP: The Plano, Texas location does not offer the dog menu.

ROCKS AND BREWS– Southern California, Florida, Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico, and Texas

This American comfort food and brew restaurant is the perfect place to dine and rock out with your pup. Rocks and Brews offers a pet friendly patio and doggie menu. They will also bring water in a bowl for your pup upon request.

SHAKE SHACK– AR, AZ, CA, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, IL, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, NJ, NV, NY, PA, TN, TX, VA, WI, WV and Great Britain

As Shake Shack states on its website, “we’ll always have a special place in our hearts for your furry four-legged friend. We were born in a park, after all!” The restaurant that started as a shack in New York City back in 2004 has now blossomed into a chain with locations throughout the country.  And thankfully you can count on the dog menu being available at all their locations nationwide except in their shacks located in stadiums, ballparks, or airports.

SONIC DRIVE-IN– 44 out of 50 states (Everywhere except AK, HI, ME, NH, RI, and VT)

Patios are not the only pet friendly option. When you and your four-legged friend(s) are out for a ride, you and can enjoy a pet friendly drive-in experience.  In true retro fashion, you order from your car and a carhop on roller skates retrieves your order. Most locations give dog biscuits, and some will even give free ice cream.

Are you crazy for cupcakes? Now your dog can be too since Sprinkles offers special doggie cupcakes on their menu. The “pupcakes” are sugar-free and topped with a yogurt frosting and a candied orange bone.

STARBUCKS– nationwide

Although this coffee company was in hot water for racial discrimination, they do not discriminate against canine companions. So while you enjoy a warm or frozen beverage, you can ask the barista to whip up a “puppuccino” for your pup. A “puppuccino” is whipped cream served in a small espresso-shot sized paper cup.

TIM HORTONS– MI, OH, IN, NY, WV, KY, PA, ME, and Canada

This coffee chain offers a sugar-free doggy version of their famous “Timbits,” bite-sized doughnuts; limited to one per canine customer.
