Flowers are nature’s gift that keeps on giving. For me, it’s like Christmas everyday when I walk outside to water or do some pruning and see a new bud pop up or a flower that was closed the day before, suddenly open up. It’s thrilling like getting flowers without having to tip. But that does not mean that there is no cost. You need to take good care of them and figure out their individual needs for the specific flower to thrive in your climate and conditions.
Not only do flowers play a crucial role in soil conservation and wildlife preservation, but they also serve as a vital lifeline for pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. I created a track for the hummingbirds in my neighborhood that visit twice a day and fly laps, delighting in the various pollinators- pineapple sage is by far their favorite. I love how productive hummingbirds are and it’s exhilarating watching how industrious they are. I am happy to contribute in my own small way.
In addition to beautifying their surroundings, flowers contribute to environmental health by purifying air, preventing erosion, and replenishing water cycles. Their vibrant hues and enticing scents attract pollinators, while their roots anchor soil, safeguarding it against erosion. Additionally, by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, flowers actively contribute to carbon cycling and help mitigate the effects of climate change. Culturally, flowers hold significance as symbols of tradition, nourishment, and healing, recognized by indigenous communities around the world.
By planting flowers native to your region, you too can benefit spiritually and boost the mood of those who pass by your yard, but also foster biodiversity and ecological well-being in your community. I had no idea how many people would stop to talk to me about my reclaimed, upcycled front yard filled with native, drought tolerant flowers both annual and perennials.
I created a list for other pet owners who enjoy flower gardens. This is list is based on the cross-section of the ASPCA list of nontoxic plants that are safe for dogs, cats and horses. Whether in a backyard garden, apartment flower box, or even a mason jar on a kitchen counter, the act of planting flowers becomes a tangible contribution to the health of the planet. From reducing stress and feelings of isolation to supporting vital ecosystems, the simple act of planting a flower help foster a greener future for the planet.
